Mrs. Frederick Wallace manuscript collection, 1717-1897.

Manuscripts collected by members of the Manuscript Committee of the Colonial Dames in Connecticut. A large proportion of the deeds and financial documents in the collection relate to James B. Shultas and Truman Sweet, both of Hartford, Connecticut. Sweet's documents include deals for running a stage coach along the west bank of the Connecticut River, and an agreement to buy two steamboats plying the same river. Among Shultas' financial records are an agreement by Levi Bulkeley to pay Shultas $75.00 if he were to open a shop for hair dressing, 1825. Financial records for both men include receipts, bills, and promissory notes. Among his deeds are three documents in which he purchased lots in the North Burying Ground in Hartford. A small number of documents relate to John and Samuel Glover of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and include a receipt for building part of a sawmill, 1751, and the tax list for 1785. Caroline Knous, Shultas' granddaughter, was executrix of his estate and a few documents from her are part of the collection. Finally, there are a selection of financial records and deeds, some for the Glovers of Massachusetts, and the others unrelated to either Shultas or Sweet.
